After reading a few rave reviews, I chose to celebrate my first anniversary at Prime 68, the steakhouse at the JW Marriott Marquis.
From the photos online, I expected the restaurant would be far too bright. We were seated by the window and it was in fact actually quite dark (hence the poor quality smartphone pics). But perfect for gazing out the window to see the lights of the cars speed by on Sheikh Zayed Road down below. The outsides of the windows could have been cleaner, but I won’t judge, as this is the world’s tallest hotel and those windows can’t be easy to reach.
I love a good steak, and even more so, I love good Wagyu. So my heart was set on the Wagyu ribeye, which has a marbling score of 9+. Apparently the steak hails from Australia’s award-winning Blackmore farm and is 100% fullblood Wagyu beef, though nothing about the steak’s provenance appears on the menu. They say that the marbling contains monounsaturated fats, which can assist in reducing cholesterol levels in the body. Say no more! I’m sold!
I ordered the 12-ouncer, which the chef recommended to be cooked medium-rare. The waiter suggested the Asian-style ginger-garlic sauce to offset the richness of the steak. He was right – it was the perfect complement. Had I ordered a creamy sauce I would have been on the floor.
The steak was served simply with a head of roasted garlic. Had it been cut for me into slices and served with a bowl of short-grain rice, I may have thought I was eating Kobe beef in Japan.
We went overboard with the sides: mac and cheese, sweet potato fries and sautéed broccolini. The mac and cheese was definitely overdoing it, but the broccolini and battered sweet potato fries were just right.
We had starters as well as dessert, but the star of the night was definitely the steak.
It was a great way to celebrate our anniversary and certainly worthy of the glowing reviews. My stomach’s rumbling as I write this so clearly I need to find another excuse to go back again soon.
