Dubai Dining: Positano’s Sunday evening brunch at JW Marriott Marquis

There’s been a big hole in the heart of my stomach ever since my favourite Italian restaurant closed down a few months ago.

I’ve tried several restaurants in an attempt to fill this void, only to be disappointed time and time again. Until I tried the Sunday evening brunch at JW Marriott Marquis’s Italian restaurant, Positano.

I really do love the JW Marriott Marquis anyway and am slowly eating my way through all of their dining options – Prime 68, Kitchen6, Vault, iftar – so my expectations were already high. But I was not disappointed.

The food is gorgeous. Brightly coloured, beautifully presented. And there’s a lot of it. Breads. Cheeses. Antipasti. Made-to-order pizzas, pastas, meats (rib eye, tenderloin and lamb chops) and seafood (tiger prawns, lobster and salmon). Soup (I think). Mains (including lasagne, lamb stew, seafood stew, and a few other options). Dessert. Gelato. A chocolate fountain.

The antipasti stole the show. The variety. The colours. Gorgonzola and walnuts on toast. Roasted fennel. Asparagus wrapped in bresaola. A bruschetta station. Tomatoes in three colours in multiple shapes and sizes! Plus my favourite – burrata. The list goes on and on.

Positano Antipasti

A stunning spread of Italian salumi – proscuitto, mortadella, salami, coppa, pancetta.

Positano Pork

Fresh, handmade pasta – three varieties of which are rolled, cut, filled right before your eyes – cooked to order with whatever sauce you want. The extruded pastas are also made in-house. I’m impressed!

Positano Pasta Maker

I had all three – eggplant, pumpkin, and lamb filled pastas with a butter and sage sauce. Yes please!

Positano Filled Pasta

Now this is what you call a hunk of cheese.

Positano Cheese

Made-to-order pizza. (Decent, though still not as good as Antonio’s pizza!)

Positano Pizza

Just beyond this chocolate fountain is a separate room full of desserts. You know there are good things to come.

Positano Chocolate Fountain

Tiramisu, Sicilian cassata, zeppole, pannacotta, and lots of other desserts.

Positano Desserts

Save room for gelato!

Positano Gelato

The food was delicious, the atmosphere pleasant, the service excellent. This just may be my new favourite buffet! And writing this reminds me of how much I need to get back there again soon. Needless to say, I rolled out of the restaurant – so I guess it’s a good thing this spread only happens once a week!

Positano’s Sunday evening brunch is open from 6pm to midnight (six hours of unlimited eating!) and costs AED 180 per person, including soft drinks and water.
